There’s something magical about setting out from Lake Tekapo—its turquoise water, the quiet hum of the village, and the sense that adventure is always just over the next ridge. Our day trip proved exactly that, taking us from alpine calm to towering peaks, through hidden geological wonders, and back to Tekapo in one unforgettable loop.

Tekapo: Where the Journey Begins

We rolled out of Tekapo under that iconic bright-blue sky, the kind that makes you want to pull over every few minutes just to take another photo. With the Southern Alps looming far in the distance, we headed north along the highway, following the shimmering canal system that threads across the landscape. Even before we reached the mountains, it already felt like a postcard-perfect road trip.

Up the Valley to Aoraki / Mount Cook

Turning onto the road to Aoraki/Mount Cook is always a moment—Lake Pukaki suddenly opens up on the right, glowing its surreal glacier-fed blue. The drive along its western edge is one of the most spectacular in New Zealand, and today was no exception.

As we approached Mount Cook Village, the mountains grew sharper and more dramatic. We stopped in for the classic viewpoint shots, took in the fresh alpine air, and wandered near the start of the Hooker Valley track. Even without doing the full walk, the scale of the peaks and the sound of the braided Tasman River make it feel like you’ve stepped straight into an alpine sanctuary.

Omarama Clay Cliffs: A Hidden Marvel

Leaving the high peaks behind, we curved back down the valley toward Twizel, then continued southeast toward Omarama. Not far from town, a gravel road leads to one of the South Island’s most unexpected natural wonders: the Omarama Clay Cliffs.

Towering spires of rock, carved by millions of years of erosion, rise like a natural cathedral from the dry hills. Standing at the base of the cliffs, it feels otherworldly—narrow passages, wind-shaped pillars, and soft light shifting across the formations. We wandered through the gullies, capturing photos and soaking up the surreal landscape.

The Loop Back to Tekapo

From Omarama, the return to Tekapo took us along winding roads framed by tussock, rolling hills, and long straight stretches perfect for reflecting on the day. As the sun dipped, the colours warmed—golden grass, soft mountains, and that familiar turquoise glow welcoming us back to Tekapo.

It was the perfect road-trip circle: mountains, lakes, hidden geology, and some of the South Island’s best scenery—all in a single loop that felt both relaxed and adventurous.

Roaming

We sold the house and now we're on the move, living full-time in our caravan. Deb and I have embraced a more mobile lifestyle, travelling around New Zealand and exploring new places as we go. With no fixed address, every day brings a new view and a fresh experience — from quiet coastal spots to scenic rural hideaways. It’s a big change from the old routine, but we’re loving the freedom, simplicity, and adventure that come with life on the road.
