Lake Hawea

There’s something magical about taking the road less traveled—especially when that road winds along the turquoise waters of Lake Hawea and leads to one of New Zealand’s most remote high-country stations. Our short road trip from Wanaka to Dingleburn Station was more than just a drive; it was an adventure filled with laughter, breathtaking views, and a sense of pure escape.

The first stretch was smooth sailing—sealed roads hugging Lake Hawea’s edge, with mountains rising dramatically in the distance. But soon, the adventure began. The road narrowed, turned to gravel, and clung to steep hillsides with sheer drops to the lake below.

When we finally reached Dingleburn, it felt like stepping into another world. This area sits in complete isolation, surrounded by rugged hills and untouched wilderness. There were no crowds, no noise—just us, the land, and a sense of timelessness.

Roaming

We sold the house and now we're on the move, living full-time in our caravan. Deb and I have embraced a more mobile lifestyle, travelling around New Zealand and exploring new places as we go. With no fixed address, every day brings a new view and a fresh experience — from quiet coastal spots to scenic rural hideaways. It’s a big change from the old routine, but we’re loving the freedom, simplicity, and adventure that come with life on the road.
