Clyde and Cromwell

Cromwell and Clyde sit right in the heart of Central Otago, surrounded by rugged hills, vineyards, and the deep blue waters of the region’s hydro lakes. Cromwell’s heritage precinct feels like stepping into the past, with old stone buildings now home to cafés, galleries, and local makers. The meeting point of the Kawarau and Clutha Rivers creates some of the most striking scenery in the area, especially around Lake Dunstan.

Just up the road, Clyde has a quieter charm. The township is full of beautifully preserved historic cottages and tree-lined streets, and it’s impossible to miss the impressive Clyde Dam standing guard at the edge of the lake. While exploring the town, it’s well worth stopping to see the striking falcon sculpture — a local favourite that celebrates the native kārearea and adds a touch of artistry to Clyde’s historic setting.

The river runs fast and clear through here, making it a favourite for summer swims, cycling the trails, and simply wandering around with an ice cream in hand. Together, Cromwell and Clyde make a perfect stop for history lovers, outdoor explorers, and anyone who enjoys small towns with a big sense of place.

Roaming

We sold the house and now we're on the move, living full-time in our caravan. Deb and I have embraced a more mobile lifestyle, travelling around New Zealand and exploring new places as we go. With no fixed address, every day brings a new view and a fresh experience — from quiet coastal spots to scenic rural hideaways. It’s a big change from the old routine, but we’re loving the freedom, simplicity, and adventure that come with life on the road.
